Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a very popular martial art and is actively engaged in by many people worldwide. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ for short, involves grappling and ground fighting between two opponents. Since BJJ involves mainly ground fighting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques use the natural advantage of body leverage and physics to provide better fighting positions and to have the opponent submit. This form of martial arts also employs strategy to attack from the back of an opponent allowing them to gain the safest place to attack from and also the most effective place to submit from.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu submissions have always been used as a way to defend one’s self rather than killing the opponent. Techniques which later permeated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were used by the Indian Buddhists hundreds of years ago, to protect themselves against attackers by subduing them and not killing them. Despite the fact that the famous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques have remained a secret for so long, they have finally become popular worldwide through the Gracie Family and are being used not only as a form of martial arts but are being learned by people world over as a way to get fit.

Some of the basic Brazilion Jiu Jitsu techniques taught include ground fighting such as sweeps, throws, chokes, arm bars, leg locks, as well as takedown defense and ground control. The submission holds in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is perhaps the most important part of the entire training. This is because, it teaches the fighter to have the opponent submit by holding them in such a position that their air supply is cut off rendering them incapable of harming you or it teaches to manipulate the joints into unnatural positions having the opponent submit.

The basic characteristic of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that differentiates it from other martial arts is fighting from a position known as the guard position. In this position, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques allow the fighter, while on his/her back, to wrap their legs effectively around the opponent thereby, limiting their opponent’s movement and allowing the fighter on the bottom to achieve victory. In this way, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the rarest forms of martial arts.

This martial art is such an effective form of self-defense that many parents are seeking to teach their children Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Such a form of self-defense allows children to avoid child abduction and in the case a threatening situation, they are able to defend themselves from bodily harm. In fact, there have been many successful instances, in which young children were able to deflect potential child abductors using Brazilion Jiu Jitsu techniques.

One story was from California, where recently a man tried to steal a truck with two children in it, while the dad was getting something out of the back. The boy used his techniques from BJJ to fend off the adult attacker, thereby saving himself and his little sister. Brazilian Jiu jitsu is also widely known for its reputation in allowing children to deal effectively with bullies at school or anywhere else they might become susceptible to physical bullying. In addition to this, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a wonderful form of exercise for children and teaches them some of the strongest principles of discipline and self-defense.
