Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is becoming a common problem as the intake of junk and unhealthy food increase in our younger generation. If this problem is not taken care of in time, childhood obesity can lead to a number of heart and breathing problems in the end. According to the childhood obesity statistics, more than 50% of our younger generation is suffering from it. A number of people think that since their child is obese, he may not be able to perform well in sports and other physical activities but childhood obesity facts show that most of the children suffering from obesity may be good in karate and jiu-jitsu if given the right kind of confidence and opportunities. Martial Arts and karate exercises can make your child get in control of his body to reduce his weight and shape up his physique.

Regular exercise tends to get boring especially for children, especially for those who are suffer from childhood obesity, however most of the children take martial arts as a game in which they learn new techniques to build stamina and calm their nerves, and thus your obese child may respond to karate more enthusiastically then regular gym sessions. While choosing a trainer for your child’s karate lessons, make sure that you go for a skilled one who is the master of his game; a good instructor builds a relationship with his student in such a way that the two are able to communicate with each other without words. An instructor with knowledge in nutrition and issues related to childhood obesity is a major plus!

Battling Childhood Obesity is a Vortex Specialty!

If you do not know any good trainer, it is preferable that you go for a karate school (Vortex Martial Arts) that holds classes
on a regular basis. Most karate schools give you a training pattern that they plan to follow for a particular time – thus you will be fully informed as to what your child is being taught in the karate school. Make sure that the karate school starts by teaching your child basic self-defense techniques, so that he knows how to defend himself in case someone tries to hit him or bully him around. Once he is able to perfect that, and then he can move on to maintaining coordination and balance and focusing on the overweight parts of his body.

Martial arts and karate require your child to be consistent, especially if childhood obesity is an issue for them, thus developing a sense of discipline in him which can help him throughout his life. In addition to this, karate can also increase the self-confidence of your child – childhood obesity facts state that most of the overweight children suffer from inferiority
complex and think of themselves as good for nothing. It is your duty as a parent to rebuild a sense of faith and trust in your child so that he is able to face every problem with strength and determination.

Childhood obesity is a common problem; you just need the right tools to bring your child’s weight under control and to make him take advantage of his physique. Get your obese child registered in a good Martial Arts program so that he is not only able to reduce his weight but also able to defend himself against any kind of bullying etc. that he might be facing in his school.

The A+ After School Karate Program gives children a positive place to go after school.

After School Karate Program at Vortex Martial Arts transports kids from school.

Vortex Martial Arts is your areas premier private martial arts training center and we provide transportation to our after school karate programs. If you are a parent and you are looking for an extremely positive and uplifting environment for your children to spend their time after the bell rings, after school martial arts is your answer. We provide a highly professional and educational environment for your children to spend their time.

After School Karate vs. Traditional Latchkey. Give your child 400 more productive hours this school year!

With traditional latchkey or after school programs parents are forced to enter a never ending rat race to get everything done. Typically it requires to rush out of work, wait in a pick up line, pick the children, take them home, get them fed, get them dressed, drive them to their activity, wait until its over, and then drive them home, only to sit down and work on homework. Of course, repeat each day for the remainder of the 41 week school year. Our after school karate program is designed to make it easy for the parent. We will take care of all these errands for you, and your child will be ready for pick up at our facility by 5:30pm. At that time they will be fed, their homework will be done, and their after school karate will be complete. This leaves the remainder of the evening to spend quality time as a family.

Furthermore, in a traiditional latchkey program, children are simply babysat until their pickup time. Throughout the course of a school year, thats over 400 hours of unproductive time spent. Our goal is to take this time and use it to develop your childs character and transform them in to a leader.

When our after school karate kids were asked about their program, here is what they said:

“I love coming to Vortex Martial Arts after school karate program because the instructors are so much nicer than they are at kids club. It also gives me great physical fitness, which I have never had before.” – Isaac S. (Roosevelt Elementary)

“After school karate is really fun because when you stay at school you just sit around. We get to learn new things every day, like defending yourself.” -Tyrone H. (Doherty Elementary)

“I like coming to after school karate every day because I’ve made great friends and I get to practice my martial arts every day!” – Joy S. (Green Elementary)

1. Improved Grades: At Vortex Martial Arts, our dynamic and fully structured martial arts for kids program is designed to teach children, young and old, the importance of a number of different traits. These significant traits are persistence, discipline, focus, and last but not least concentration. Radical developments in these particular qualities will give your child the necessary tools they need to excel with their overall education and performance at school. Therefore, martial arts for kids guarantees that you can expect your son or daughter to receive better grades for both academically and in citizenship.

2. Vortex Martial Arts Builds Healthy Children: Martial Arts for kids is great exercise! The goal is to make certain that your son or daughter will breathe better, eat healthier and sleep sounder. Students who take the martial arts for kids classes at Vortex Martial Arts are slimmer, they make overall better choices about food and other matters, and take better care of themselves. Improved self-respect aids young individuals in making proper choices. You will never see a Vortex Martial Arts Black Belt student smoking or taking drugs!

3. Positive Attitude: Our martial arts for kids programs teaches kids how to consistently uphold a positive self-image as well as their attitude towards others. Never again will you have to hear yourself repeating yourself or arguing with your son or daughter. Kids at Vortex Martial Arts learn to be respectful and caring to their parents and elders. You will always hear our children say “Yes Ma’am!” or “yes Sir!”

4. Self-Confidence: It’s a fact, kids that participate in our martial arts for kids programs end up developing a top notch level of self-confidence. At Vortex, your child will be encouraged to excel and drive themselves further and farther than they ever thought would be obtainable. The extreme level of success they will experience through our martial arts for kids program educates them how they can be overwhelmingly successful at any topic, if they truly believe in themselves, their abilities, and who they are. Vortex kids carry the confidence to say NO to drugs and peer pressure.

5. Self-Defense: Martial Arts for kids teaches self-defense on two different tiers. The first tier is physical fitness. At Vortex Martial Arts, your son or daughter will obtain the skills so they know how NOT to fight, at the same time they will develop the necessary skills needed to stand up for themselves and BE SAFE if the unfortunate need ever did present itself. Secondly, mental and emotional fitness. The kids will develop the mental & emotional fitness needed to stand up to pressure from their peers and bullies in and out of school. They will have developed the self-confidence to always make the right choices, especially the hard ones. They will be empowered with the skills need to be a VICTOR, and never a VICTIM.

Bullying in Schools

The cases of bullying in schools in Leander and Cedar Park, actually Leander ISD in general, have dramatically risen in the last couple of years! Children who are bullied in school develop a sense of deep fear and frustration that can lead to lifelong psychological problems as they grow older. Bullying statistics show that one out of every ten children that are bullied by classmates in school cry out for help in extreme ways.

This leads too many victims attempting suicide as a result of the harsh bullying they are exposed to at school. Bullying has more than doubled in a matter of just a few years in our schools, despite the attempts of the school district to handle the situation with home grown programs or programs that fit there “daycare” criteria. It would seem prudent for individual
schools or entire school systems to partner with martial arts schools to prevent and stop bullying, as that is a specialty of the martial arts. Unfortunately, schools are always reluctant to partner with these private businesses, even though martial arts centers have the actual answers that are needed to fix the problem.

In order to stop bullying in their child’s life, it is very important for parents to first develop a relationship of friendship with their child so that if they are being bullied at school, they feel comfortable enough to come up to the parents and discuss the problem. If your relationship with your son or daughter is not open enough, they may never be comfortable enough to talk to you about this or anything else. In addition to this, once they discuss their problem with you, try not to over react to it. Be calm, listen to whatever they are saying, and then start looking for a solution. They must feel that you love them and no matter how they reacted to the problem that they were not “wrong” or that they handled it like a “wimp”. The full love, support, and backing of the parents or guardians are mandatory at this moment to ensure your child’s psychological and physical recovery.

Once they know that you have their back, start searching for solutions to give them the tools to defend themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically if necessary. They must also know that you will be confidentially discussing this with
their teachers, principle, and any other adult necessary so that you have created a support team to protect your child, and that the bully will not know of this causing your child to be labeled as a tattle tale.

Frankly, parents, teachers, and other adults cannot always be there to stop or catch bullies. Therefore, the best
solution to stop bullying NOW is to give your child the basic training of Martial Arts.

Martial Arts exercises can help children in getting out the inner frustration and channeling it into more constructive things; as our child is bullied, they start developing a sense of inferiority within themselves. Karate and Martial Arts exercises target this negative energy and convert it into positive energy through proper training and self-control techniques. If you have the misconception that karate and the martial arts are all about kicking and punching then you need to visit a good karate school in your area to become educated as to the character development that happens through their programs.

In addition to managing your child’s negative energy, karate also teaches your child to defend himself in troubled situations like the bullying in schools. It gives your child the self-confidence he needs to face the world which builds a strong character and positive personality. Martial Arts schools offer different kinds of training programs. Some schools are “tournament focused” while others are “self defense and character focused”. There are day, afternoon, and evening prgrams to choose from. Some schools offer after school programs with transportation provided, as well as daycamp and summer camp training programs. Summer training programs are AWESOME as they prepare for those bullying him at school as soon as the fall classes commence.

Martial Arts are fun to learn if you have a good instructor. While getting your child registered, make sure that the instructor is knowledgeable, fun, and understanding. It may not even be a bad idea to join karate classes yourself, so that your child knows that you are there for them at all times. At the end of the day, it is your actions that your child will believe the most, so speak and act with love towards them and keep on telling them that they are the most important thing in your life! Bullying in schools is not something that will go away on its own so please don’t wait.

At all of our locations including Leander, Cedar Park, Abilene, and West Bloomfield Michigan we teach your child how to not be a victim of bully. Contact Us or come by and watch a class in person and see what you think.

Diet Concerns for our Kids

Unfortunately we have an epidemic in the United States of severely overweight and unhealthy children. It seems that society has no real answers to it. The diet of our young people is poison. Meat that is laced with antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals is ingested daily. Fruit and vegetables covered in poisons, insecticides, preservatives, etc. are commonplace. Now, in addition to all of this we face the onslaught of Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) which are foods derived from genetically modified organisms.

Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise than mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding; plant breeding, and animal breeding, and somaclonal variation.

Children’s bodies develop at a fast pace and are more likely to be influenced and show the effects of genetically modified (GM) foods. That is why independent scientists used young adolescent rats in their GM feeding studies. The rats showed significant health damage after only 10 days, including damaged immune systems and digestive function, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, partial atrophy of the liver, and potentially pre-cancerous cell growth in the intestines.

Children are more susceptible to Allergies

Children are three to four times more prone to allergies than adults. Infants below two years old are at greatest risk-they have the highest incidence of reactions, especially to new allergens encountered in the diet. Even tiny amounts of allergens can sometimes cause reactions in children. Breast fed infants can be exposed via the mother’s diet, and fetuses may possibly be exposed in the womb. Michael Meacher, the former minister of the environment for the UK, said, “Any baby food containing GM products could lead to a dramatic rise in allergies.” GM corn is particularly problematic for children, as they generally eat a higher percentage of corn in their diet. Further, allergic children often rely on corn protein. Mothers using cornstarch as a talc substitute on their children’s skin might also inadvertently expose them via inhalation.

Children are more susceptible to problems with milk

Milk and dairy products from cows treated with the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH) contain an increased amount of the hormone IGF-1, which is one of the highest risk factors associated with breast and prostate cancer. The Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Medical Association called for more studies to determine if ingesting “higher than normal concentrations of [IGF-1] is safe for children, adolescents, and adults.” Sam Epstein, M.D., Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and author of eight books, wrote, “rbGH and its digested products could be absorbed from milk into blood, particularly in infants, and produce hormonal and allergic effects.” He described how “cell-stimulating growth factors . . . could induce premature growth and breast stimulation in infants, and possibly promote breast cancer in adults.” Dr. Epstein pointed out that the hormones in cows could promote the production of “steroids and adrenaline-type stressor chemicals . . . likely to contaminate milk and may be harmful, particularly to infants and young children.”

Children are more susceptible to nutritional problems

A 2002 report by the UK’s Royal Society, said that genetic modification “could lead to unpredicted harmful changes in the nutritional state of foods.” They therefore recommended that potential health effects of GM foods be rigorously researched before being fed to pregnant or breast-feeding women, elderly people, those suffering from chronic disease, and babies. Likewise, according to former minister Meacher, unexpected changes in estrogen levels in GM soy used in infant formula “might affect sexual development in children,” and that “even small nutritional changes could cause bowel obstruction.”

Children are in danger from antibiotic resistant diseases

Children prone to ear and other infections are at risk of facing antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, due to the use of antibiotic resistant genes in GM food. The British Medical Association cited this as one reason why they called for a moratorium of GM foods.

With all of this unhealthy food being forced into our society how do we do what is best for our families? Buy Organic whenever posiible, find a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in your area to participate in or purchase from, and support sustainable organic farming mehods and farms in your area by purchasing direct whenever possible. Drink old fashioned, unpasteurized milk from a clean source. Drink milk alternatives like almond or rice milk. Avoid soy milk as most of it comes from GM soy beans which is extremely unhealthy. Tell me what you think..

Discipline and Parenting

After having had the privilege of teaching the martial arts to thousands of students for 20 years, I have seen just about every way to parent under the sun. In addition to the parenting culture of the USA, I have both traveled and lived overseas many times and witnessed first hand the European, and Asian cultures.

That said, I believe that children come in all shapes and sizes. You can not treat children equally, but you must treat them fairly according to their individual personalities. Some children you can tell not to touch something and they just don’t touch it. Other children think about it, wait, and do it later. Still others will look at you, smile, and do exactly as they were instructed not to. Obviously, discipline would be reserved for the latter two examples.

In my opinion, when discipline is needed it should be painful enough to not only shock the behavior at hand, but leave a lasting impression for the future. Once consequences have been administered, the child should be dealt with lovingly and supportively. They should be told that you love them and the reasons that they were disciplined. They should also have the difference between “being disciplined” and exercising “self discipline” explained to them. I do not believe in time outs or taking things away unless you have a child that rarely needs discipline AND when discipline is given in small doses, the lesson is learned and there are no repeats of this behavior.

For the other 95% of children it has been my experience that there MUST be a balance of love and discipline. I have seen so many parents that raise children without discipline because they buy into the psycho babble that “spanking teaches children to hit” or “painful consequences” in someway damage a child’s creative abilities. It has worked itself out every time that the children raised in these environments have grown to be spoiled teens and adults that their parents ultimately lose control of. They have no respect for their teachers, society, and ultimately their parents.

In 20 years of teaching and having hundreds of discussions with these types of parents, I have never been wrong. However, I would love to hear your opinions on the subject.

Sport Karate Can Get You Killed!

In this day and age it is unfortunate that so many martial arts schools that teach sport arts, claim that they are teaching useful self defense technique. Deep stances are great for strength training, but not for fast movement.

Also, some schools teach straight leg fighting stance while teaching their students to hold their guard hands under the chin, rather then protecting the face and head.So use your head, which is the most important thing to protect is vulnerable, and the ability to spring into attacks or defense is greatly hindered. Sport arts teach speed and agility, but also teach retreat after a point is scored.

Does traditional SPORT martial arts training hinder or help self defense for the student?
